Before this lesson

Why this matters

A clear repertoire helps instructors progress clients safely from foundations to more demanding work.

Repertoire

ExerciseFocus
TeaserBalance and abdominal strength
Roll-overSpinal flexion inversion
JackknifeInversion with extension
CorkscrewRotational control
Open-leg rockerBalance and flexion
Scissors and bicycleInverted control
BoomerangFlow and coordination
Control balanceInverted balance
Side bend / mermaidLateral strength

Many of these derive from the classical repertoire [pilates1945], taught with the principles of control and precision [wells2012].

Teaching notes

Teach only to clients with excellent foundations. Inversions load the cervical and thoracic spine — contraindicated for osteoporosis, neck problems, pregnancy, uncontrolled hypertension and glaucoma.

Sample 45-minute class

Centring and breathing5 minLateral breathing, pelvic floor engagement
Warm-up8 minPelvic curls, spinal mobility
Main25 minSelected repertoire, balanced across planes
Cool-down7 minStretches, relaxation

[giangregorio2014] recommends avoiding loaded and end-range spinal flexion for people with osteoporosis — offer alternatives.

Common mistakes and misconceptions

Case study

An instructor runs a advanced class of 12. She offers two levels for each exercise and checks screening forms; a participant with osteopenia receives alternatives to rolling and flexion-heavy exercises.
