Learning objectives

  • Use bands for assisted stretching and mobility
  • Teach postural strengthening exercises
  • Deliver full-body strength sessions with bands
  • Progress band exercises

Before this lesson

Why this matters

With a few bands, clients can train mobility, posture and full-body strength anywhere.

Mobility and stretching

Assisted hamstring stretch, shoulder dislocates (wide grip), banded hip flexor stretch. Strength through full range also improves mobility [afonso2021].

Postural strengthening

ExerciseFocus
Band pull-apartUpper back
Face pullRear shoulders, rotator cuff
External rotationRotator cuff
Banded rowMid-back

Brief daily band programmes reduced neck/shoulder pain [andersen2011].

Strength

Squat, Romanian deadlift, push-up with band, overhead press, row, split squat. Strength gains comparable to weights [lopes2019].

Progression

Tension → range → tempo → volume → unilateral.

Common mistakes and misconceptions

Case study

An office team runs a 10-minute daily band routine (pull-aparts, face pulls, rows, external rotations). After 10 weeks, self-reported neck and shoulder discomfort falls.

Short-answer & application questions

  1. Design a 20-minute band strength session.
  2. Teach a band shoulder routine.
  3. Create a band mobility routine.

Key takeaways

  • Bands assist stretching by providing gentle traction and support.
  • Postural strengthening: rows, face pulls, pull-aparts, external rotation.
  • Strength: squats, presses, rows, hinges, lunges with heavier bands.
  • Progress by band tension, range, tempo, volume and unilateral work.
