The end-to-end S&C process — needs analysis, goal setting, programme design, session preparation, delivery, evaluation and working within a multidisciplinary team.
Learning objectives
- Conduct a needs analysis of sport, athlete and context
- Translate needs into goals and a programme
- Prepare sessions, facilities and risk assessments
- Deliver, evaluate and review programmes within a team
Before this lesson
Why this matters
S&C is a process, not a collection of workouts. Professional practice moves from analysis to delivery to evaluation, in collaboration with others.
1. Needs analysis
| Component | Questions |
|---|---|
| Sport | Energy systems, movement patterns, speeds, forces |
| Injury profile | Common injuries and mechanisms |
| Athlete | Testing results, training age, injury history, maturity |
| Context | Calendar, facilities, time, travel, staff |
2. Goals and programme
Set SMART goals for priority qualities. Design the macro/meso/micro plan and sessions [haff2016].
3. Preparation
- Facility and equipment checks; layout for flow and safety.
- Risk assessment and emergency action plan.
- Session plans with progressions, regressions and contingencies (weather, numbers, injuries).
4. Delivery
Clear briefing, effective warm-up, coaching and supervision, adaptation to readiness.
5. Evaluation
Monitor training load, wellness, testing outcomes and athlete feedback; review with the coaching and medical team.
Common mistakes and misconceptions
Case study
A new S&C coach at a basketball club conducts a needs analysis, finds frequent ankle sprains and low lower-body strength, and introduces landing and strength priorities. After a season, ankle injuries fall and jump test results improve.
